Story identification by illustration

So I have an awfully vague image that I'm hoping may trigger some recognition in the mind of someone out there. I remember owning a collection of scary stories / folk tales when I was a child (early 90s) - hardback, purple in colour. One illustration that I cannot get out of my mind is of a young, hooded boy who seems to be petrified by something following him. I remember he had red eyes, a shadow fell over his face and the hood was almost that of a monks. A door was open behind him and there the shadow of a creature onto the wall. I don't remember anything about the story, all I can picture is this and this ominous sense of foreboding that goes along with it. It was definitely a children's book, I know that much, but I haven't had much luck finding the title. Hopefully someone out there has read this too!
